Whippet Dog Grooming.

A Whippet has almost no coat, almost no body fat, and almost no tolerance for cold — which turns a technically simple groom into an exercise in gentleness and warmth. K-Pup grooms Whippets mobile, in a heated trailer, one dog at a time, so this delicate-skinned sighthound is never sitting around wet or waiting cold in a crate.

Skin, Coat & Sensitivity

Grooming a breed with almost nothing to work with.

Whippets come in nearly every color and pattern, all sharing the same fine single coat. For background, see the AKC Whippet breed page.

The Fine Single Coat

Short, smooth and single-layered with essentially no undercoat. It sheds lightly year-round, and a soft rubber curry plus a gentle bath is genuinely all the coat itself requires.

Extremely Thin, Sensitive Skin

A Whippet's skin is famously thin and prone to nicks, scrapes and quick irritation. We use soft brushes, low water pressure and careful attention around every bony point.

Almost No Body Fat

With so little insulation, a wet Whippet chills within minutes. Bath water stays warm, drying happens immediately and completely, and the trailer itself stays heated in cold months.

Prominent Bones & Joints

Hips, spine and elbows sit close to the surface with little padding. Table time is kept short with soft matting underneath, and handling stays light throughout.

Built For A Fragile-Skinned Sprinter

Warmth and gentleness above everything else.

Warm water, always

Cold water is genuinely uncomfortable on skin this thin. Every bath uses warm water and a mild shampoo suited to sensitive skin, never anything harsh or stripping.

Dry fast, dry completely

A damp Whippet loses body heat almost immediately given the lack of coat and fat. We dry thoroughly before the dog ever steps back outside, even in mild weather.

Nails matter for a sprinter's structure

Whippets run at real speed, and long nails affect how the foot strikes the ground. Short, smooth nails support the joint alignment this breed relies on to move safely.

No forcing a stance

Whippets are gentle but easily startled by rough handling. We let them lie down for parts of the groom when possible rather than insisting on a held standing position.

Our Process

How we groom a Whippet.

Every whippet appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 1 hr, one dog at a time.

  1. Warm, gentle greeting

A soft introduction in a heated trailer, letting a naturally anxious sighthound settle before any handling begins.

  2. Warm-water bath

A gentle, sensitive-skin shampoo used in warm water, with light pressure throughout given how thin and delicate the skin is.

  3. Immediate, complete drying

Fast, thorough drying begins the moment the bath ends, since a Whippet chills within minutes of being wet given the lack of coat and fat.

  4. Soft curry finish

A soft rubber curry lifts any remaining loose hair from the fine single coat without irritating sensitive skin.

  5. Nails with a light touch

Nails clipped short and smooth to support proper joint alignment for a breed built for speed, with gentle handling throughout.

  6. Warmth confirmation

A final check to confirm the dog is completely dry and warm before stepping back outside, even on mild days.

Fun Facts

The best things about whippets.

We groom a lot of whippets, and every one of them reminds us why the breed has such a loyal following. Here's what we love about the whippet.

The fastest breed for its size

Whippets can reach speeds over 35 miles per hour and are sometimes called the 200-meter sprinters of the dog world.

Bred from Greyhounds and terriers

The breed developed in 19th-century England by crossing small Greyhounds with terriers, originally for rabbit coursing and racing.

Couch potatoes at heart

Despite their speed, Whippets are famously low-energy indoors and spend most of the day curled up, often under a blanket.

Almost no insulation

With minimal coat and body fat, Whippets are notably cold-sensitive and many owners keep jackets on hand for winter walks.

Skin thinner than most breeds

Whippet skin is delicate enough that even routine handling calls for a gentler touch than most similarly sized dogs need.

Whippet Grooming FAQ

Questions whippets owners ask us.

How often should a Whippet be groomed?

Every 6 to 8 weeks for a gentle bath, curry and nails. This breed needs far less frequent bathing than most, but nail trims should stay on a consistent schedule.

Why does my Whippet need a jacket outside?

Almost no coat and very little body fat means Whippets chill quickly, especially in Maine's cooler months. Staying fully dry and warm after grooming matters as much as any jacket.

Is my Whippet's skin really that delicate?

Yes — the skin is thin even by sighthound standards and marks or nicks easily. We use soft tools and gentle pressure throughout to keep it comfortable.

Do Whippets shed much?

Very little, and in fine hairs given the single coat with no undercoat. A soft curry brush during a bath handles it easily.

Is mobile grooming a good fit for a nervous Whippet?

Often, yes. A quiet one-on-one session with no crate wait and no unfamiliar dogs nearby suits a breed that startles easily far better than a busy salon.
