Full Show-Length Coats
A full-length OES coat is a genuine daily commitment — brushing to the skin, every layer, every day, or it mats within a week. We only recommend keeping this length for owners who can realistically maintain it at home between our visits, and we're honest if a coat is already past what regular brushing can manage.
Practical Pet Trims
The vast majority of pet OES do best on a shorter, even trim — long enough to keep the shaggy character of the breed, short enough that mats can't form faster than a normal home brushing routine can keep up with. This is what we recommend for most families, and it's a much easier life for the dog.
Pelted Coats
When a coat has gone past individual mats and packed into a solid felt-like layer against the skin — what groomers call pelting — brushing it out is not humane or safe; it means hours of pulling on already-inflamed skin. Our policy in that situation is a full shave-down for the dog's comfort and skin health, done as gently and quickly as possible, with a clear explanation before we start.
Puppies & Coat Change
OES puppies carry a soft coat that mats easily and then goes through a heavier, coarser coat change around a year old that mats even faster if it's not kept up with. Frequent short visits during this stage prevent the coat from getting away from you.

Our full de-matting policy
We'll always try to save a coat that can be safely combed out. But once matting has packed into pelting against the skin, continuing to brush it causes real pain and skin damage with no benefit — at that point we recommend and perform a full shave-down, explain exactly why, and help you set up a schedule so it doesn't happen again.
The undercoat never stops
OES undercoat is dense and constant, not just seasonal. On dogs kept at a longer length, we line-brush and high-velocity dry in sections through the entire coat every visit — there's no shortcut on a dog this size and this coated.
Beach sand and salt marsh mud
A big, shaggy coat that gets wet and sandy at Goose Rocks or muddy near the salt marsh dries into the coat and accelerates matting within days. If your OES loves the water, a shorter practical trim and a rinse-down after beach trips makes a real difference.
Eyes, ears and a big dog's joints
The breed's famous coat over the eyes needs regular trimming so it doesn't obscure vision or trap debris, and drop ears need thorough cleaning and drying. We also support hips and joints carefully on and off the table, since large-breed joint issues are common in this breed.

Our Process
How we groom a Old English Sheepdog.
Every old english sheepdog appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr 30 min, one dog at a time.
Full coat and skin assessment
We run hands through the entire coat down to the skin to gauge matting severity and check for pelting before deciding on today's plan, and we talk it through with you honestly.
Sectioned line brushing
Working in small sections across the whole body, we brush and comb every layer to the skin — the only way to know what's actually salvageable before bathing.
De-matting or shave-down decision
Mats that comb out safely are worked through by hand; any coat that's pelted solid against the skin is clipped short instead of forced, for the dog's comfort and skin health.
Full bath and conditioning
A deep-cleaning shampoo followed by a heavy conditioner worked into whatever coat length remains, then rinsed completely clean.
High-velocity dry
A thorough, sectioned high-velocity dry through the full coat, which on a longer-coated OES can take as long as the rest of the groom combined.
Face, feet, nails and finish
Eye and face hair trimmed clear of the eyes, feet and sanitary tidied, nails clipped and ground, ears cleaned, and a final brush-out before your sheepdog goes home.

How often does an OES need to be groomed?
Every 6 to 8 weeks at minimum, and closer to every 4 to 6 weeks for dogs kept at a longer length. Daily home brushing to the skin is required for any OES kept long — a shorter pet trim needs far less upkeep between visits.
What happens if my sheepdog's coat is already matted?
We'll assess it honestly and try to save what can be safely combed out. If the coat has pelted solidly against the skin, we'll recommend a full shave-down rather than force a brush-out that would hurt the dog — and we'll always explain why before we start.
Can you keep my OES at full show length?
Yes, if you can commit to daily brushing at home between our visits. We'll be honest with you about what that actually takes, since a full-length OES coat mats within about a week without it.
Is a shorter trim bad for an Old English Sheepdog?
Not at all — a well-done shorter trim keeps the dog comfortable, cooler in summer, and much easier to keep mat-free, while still looking like the shaggy breed everyone recognizes.
Do you groom OES puppies?
Yes, and we recommend starting early. Puppy coat mats easily and the coat change around a year old happens fast, so regular shorter visits during that stage prevent bigger problems later.
