Breed Grooming Guide 5.0 · Southern Maine

Pug Dog Grooming.

Pugs are short-coated, which people hear as low-maintenance — right up until they meet the shedding. A pug carries a dense double coat on a small frame, plus facial folds and a nose roll that need cleaning every single week. K-Pup grooms pugs mobile, with low-stress handling and drying built around a flat-faced dog's breathing.

Fawn, Black & In Between

Grooming for every pug.

Coat color changes how much a pug sheds, and age changes how long a pug can comfortably stand on a table. For breed background, see the AKC Pug breed page.

Fawn Pugs

Fawn pugs carry a true double coat and shed more than almost any dog their size. A deshedding bath with a full blow-out removes a startling amount of hair — most owners notice the difference for weeks.

Black Pugs

Black pugs usually have a single coat: less shedding, but the coat shows dandruff and dullness quickly. A conditioning rinse and a soft finish keeps the black glossy rather than dusty.

Puppy Pugs

Early visits are about the face. A puppy who learns that wrinkle cleaning and ear checks are normal turns into an adult who doesn't fight the most important part of the groom.

Senior & Overweight Pugs

Older pugs overheat and tire fast. We shorten the session, keep the trailer cool, and use warm air at low pressure instead of a long high-velocity dry.

Built For Wrinkles

Folds, breathing and a lot of hair.

The nose roll needs cleaning and drying

Yeast and bacteria live in a damp fold. We clean the nose roll and every facial wrinkle, then dry them completely — the drying is the part most people skip, and it's the part that prevents the smell and the irritation.

Eyes are exposed

Pug eyes sit forward with little protection, so nothing sprays near the face and shampoo never comes close. We use a tearless wash on the head and wipe rather than rinse.

Breathing sets the pace

Brachycephalic dogs stress-breathe when they get hot or anxious. We watch respiration the whole time, use cool air, and take breaks before a dog needs one — no forced-air blasting into a flat face.

Deshedding actually works here

A carding tool and a proper blow-out pull the dead undercoat that a brush at home never reaches. For fawn pugs, a deshed every 6 weeks is the single most effective thing you can do about the hair on your furniture.

The Pug Dog Club of America publishes health resources on brachycephalic care and skin folds that are worth reading between appointments.

Our Process

How we groom a Pug.

Every pug appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 1 hr, one dog at a time.

  1. Breathing and skin check

We look at every fold, the nose roll, the ears and the tail set, and note how your pug is breathing before we start.

  2. Deshedding bath

Deshedding shampoo and conditioner worked into the double coat, with a tearless wash on the face and a long rinse.

  3. Carding and low-pressure dry

Dead undercoat carded out and dried with warm, moderate air kept well away from the face.

  4. Wrinkle and nose-roll care

Every fold cleaned with a gentle solution, then dried completely — the step that keeps the face comfortable between visits.

  5. Ears, nails and sanitary

Ears cleaned, nails clipped and ground, sanitary and pads tidied.

  6. Cool down and finish

A few minutes to settle and breathe easy, a coat conditioner, and back inside with you.

Fun Facts

The best things about pugs.

We groom a lot of pugs, and every one of them reminds us why the breed has such a loyal following. Here's what we love about the pug.

Bred for Chinese emperors

Pugs were companions to Chinese royalty for two thousand years, sometimes with their own guards. It shows.

The motto fits

"Multum in parvo" — a lot in a little. Fourteen inches of dog with the presence of something much larger.

A group of them is a grumble

That's the actual collective noun. A grumble of pugs. Nothing has ever been named better.

Wrinkles came first

The head folds were reportedly bred to resemble Chinese characters — beautiful, and the reason weekly fold care matters.

Endlessly good-natured

Pugs are among the least reactive small dogs we groom. Everyone is a friend, including the vacuum.

Pug Grooming FAQ

Questions pugs owners ask us.

How often should a pug be groomed?

Every 6 to 8 weeks for a bath and deshed, with facial folds cleaned at home once or twice a week. Fawn pugs in shedding season often do best at 6.

How do I stop my pug from shedding so much?

You can't stop it, but a professional deshedding bath removes far more dead coat than brushing does. Most owners see a large drop in loose hair for three to four weeks after a treatment.

Is grooming safe for a flat-faced dog?

It is when the groomer plans for it. We keep the space cool, avoid high-velocity air near the face, watch breathing throughout, and keep sessions short — which is much easier one dog at a time in a mobile trailer.

Do you clean pug wrinkles?

Every visit, and we dry them thoroughly afterward. If a fold looks infected rather than dirty, we'll flag it so you can get ahead of it with your vet.

Where in southern Maine do you groom pugs?

We come to you across Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Wells, Ogunquit, York, Arundel, Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach and Scarborough.
