Chihuahuas don't need a haircut — they need a groomer who won't rush them. Most of what a chihuahua actually requires is a warm bath, nails kept short, ears cleaned and teeth watched, all done by someone who takes the fear seriously. Smooth Coat Chihuahuas
Short doesn't mean no-maintenance. Smooth chis shed steadily and have thin, sensitive skin, so they get a mild shampoo, a rubber curry to lift dead hair, and a gentle warm dry rather than a blast of high velocity air.
Long Coat Chihuahuas
The fringe on the ears, chest, legs and tail mats quietly behind the ears and in the armpits. We comb it out to the skin, tidy the feet and sanitary, and shape the skirt without taking away the coat.
Chihuahua Mixes
Chiweenies, chipoos and other small mixes carry unpredictable coats — sometimes wiry, sometimes curly. We assess the coat in front of us and groom to the dog rather than the label.
Seniors and Very Small Chis
Dogs under four pounds and dogs in their teens chill fast and tire faster. Warm water, warm towels, low-heat drying and a short, efficient session are the whole approach.

Nails are the number-one need
Chihuahuas almost never wear their nails down on pavement. Overgrown nails change how the foot lands and stress the knees. We clip and grind smooth every visit and can do nail-only appointments as often as every three weeks.
Dental disease starts early
Crowded little mouths build tartar faster than any other size of dog. We brush, we point out what we see, and we'll tell you honestly when it's time for a vet dental.
Fear-free handling
A shaking, snapping chihuahua is a frightened dog, not a bad one. We go slowly, keep four feet supported, skip the loud dryer when it isn't needed, and end on a good note even if that means finishing next time.
Warmth matters in Maine
Thin coats and low body mass mean chihuahuas lose heat fast. The trailer stays warm, the water stays warm, and your dog goes home dry — not damp on a February afternoon.

Our Process
How we groom a Chihuahua.
Every chihuahua appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 45 min, one dog at a time.
Say hello first
Small, worried dogs get a few minutes to settle in the trailer before anything happens. Treats, a warm table and no rush.
Warm bath
A mild shampoo at a comfortable temperature, with a tearless wash on the face and a thorough rinse.
Low-heat dry
Warm towels first, then gentle air — never a loud blast at a nervous chihuahua. Long coats get brushed as they dry.
Comb-out and tidy
Long coats combed to the skin with light shaping of the fringe and skirt; smooth coats carded to lift dead hair.
Nails, pads and ears
Nails clipped and ground smooth, pad hair trimmed, sanitary tidied and ears cleaned and checked.
Teeth and finish
A teeth-brushing if it's booked, a look at the gums, and your dog handed back warm and dry.

How often does a chihuahua need grooming?
A bath every 6 to 8 weeks suits most chihuahuas, but nails need attention every 3 to 4 weeks. Long coats benefit from a comb-out at home once a week.
Do chihuahuas need haircuts?
No. Neither coat variety should be clipped short. We tidy feet, sanitary and stray fringe on long coats, and leave the coat itself alone.
My chihuahua bites the groomer. What now?
Tell us before we start. We work fear-free, take breaks, use a soft muzzle only when safety requires it, and build the visit up over several appointments rather than forcing one long session.
Do you do nail-only appointments?
Yes, and for chihuahuas they're a great idea. A quick nail and ear visit between full grooms keeps the feet healthy and keeps the trailer a low-stress place.
