German shepherds shed more than any other breed we work on — twice a year they blow coat so heavily it looks like a second dog came out. K-Pup grooms shepherds in a quiet one-dog trailer at your house, where the hair stays outside and the dog stays calm.
Stock, Plush & Long Coats
Grooming for every shepherd coat.
Shepherds come in three coat lengths and each one behaves differently under a rake. Breed background and coat detail are on the AKC German Shepherd Dog breed page.
Stock Coat (Short)
The classic working coat: short guard hairs over a heavy undercoat. Looks easy, sheds relentlessly. A rake-out, deshedding bath and full force-dry is the whole program.
Plush Coat (Medium)
A little more length through the neck, britches and tail. Packs down behind the ears and along the pants — we line-comb those areas before the bath so the dryer can do its job.
Long Coat
Feathered ears, skirt, britches and tail plume, often without a full undercoat. These mat where short-coated shepherds never do, so we comb to the skin and hand-tidy the feathering and hocks.
Working Dogs & Reactive Shepherds
Plenty of shepherds are wary of strangers and hate salons. A private trailer in your own driveway, with you nearby, is often the only setting where the groom goes smoothly. Tell us at booking and we'll plan the handling.
Built For Coat Blows
Twice a year, the whole undercoat has to come out.
Rake, bathe, force-dry, repeat
The undercoat releases in clumps during spring and fall. We rake before the bath, use a deshedding solution in the tub, then blow the coat out with high velocity — the dryer removes more dead hair than any brush ever will.
Never shave a shepherd
The double coat is temperature regulation and sun protection in one. Shaving ruins the guard-hair layer and often grows back uneven. A properly deshedded shepherd is cooler in August than a shaved one.
Hot spots, hocks and pants
Moisture trapped in the pants and behind the ears turns into hot spots fast in a humid coastal summer. We dry completely and keep the sanitary area and hocks tidy so nothing stays damp.
Nails, pads and rear-end support
Shepherds are prone to hip and back-end issues, and long nails make it worse. Short, ground-smooth nails and clean pad hair help an aging shepherd keep its footing on stairs and hardwood.

Our Process
How we groom a German Shepherd.
Every german shepherd appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr 30 min, one dog at a time.
Low-key intake
Shepherds read the room. We let the dog meet us in its own driveway, keep the handling calm and confident, and skip the salon lobby entirely — no strangers, no barking, no crate.
Dry rake through the ruff and pants
We rake the neck ruff, britches and tail before the bath, and line-comb behind the ears and along the pants where plush and long coats pack down into felt.
Deshedding bath
A clarifying wash followed by a deshedding treatment massaged to the skin. On a shepherd mid-coat-blow the water runs gray with undercoat — that's the point.
Full high-velocity blow-out
The main event. We drive air through the coat in sections until the undercoat stops coming, then card the body. A shepherd that leaves properly blown out sheds a fraction of what it did that morning.
Hocks, pants, feet and sanitary
Long coats get the ear feathering, skirt, hocks and tail plume hand-tidied. Every shepherd gets pad hair shaved and the sanitary area cleaned up so nothing traps moisture.
Ears, nails and finish
Ears cleaned and dried, nails clipped and ground short so the rear end stays supported, and a final comb-through with a tick check before we hand the dog back.
