Hand-Stripped Show Texture
Pulling dead outer hair by hand rather than cutting it preserves the coat's crisp, weatherproof texture and the breed's signature dark saddle color. It takes longer and is done in stages, but the result is a coat that sheds almost nothing between sessions.
Clippered Pet Trims
Clipping is faster and perfectly appropriate for a companion Airedale, but it softens the wire texture over time and can fade the coat toward gray. We're upfront about that trade-off so owners can choose with open eyes.

Our Process
How we groom a Airedale Terrier.
Every airedale terrier appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr, one dog at a time.
Coat assessment and plan
A check of the wire coat's condition and a quick conversation about hand-stripping versus a clippered trim before anything starts.
Brush-out to the skin
Full-body brushing through the undercoat, with extra attention behind the ears and around the collar where felting starts first.
Hand-stripping or clipping
Dead outer coat is pulled in stages for texture, or the body is clippered for a faster pet trim, depending on the plan.
Bath and full dry
A wash timed around the coat work, followed by a complete high-velocity dry down to the skin.
Scissoring furnishings
Hand-scissoring the beard, brows and leg furnishings into the breed's square, terrier outline.
Ears, nails and final check
Ear cleaning, nail trim and a last look over the whole coat before your Airedale heads back inside.

How often should an Airedale Terrier be groomed?
Every 6 to 8 weeks for a clippered trim, or on a longer, staged schedule for hand-stripping since it's done in rounds rather than one sitting.
What's the difference between hand-stripping and clipping?
Hand-stripping pulls dead outer hair to preserve the coat's hard, weatherproof texture and dark color. Clipping cuts the coat and is quicker, but the texture softens and the coat tends to lighten over repeated clips.
Do Airedales shed?
Very little compared to most breeds, especially when hand-stripped. Clipped Airedales shed a bit more as the coat loses some of its wire structure over time.
My Airedale's beard always looks dirty. What helps?
Regular rinsing and towel-drying after meals and outdoor time, plus keeping the beard trimmed to a manageable length, cuts down on staining and buildup between full grooms.
Are Airedales easy to groom?
They're intelligent and generally cooperative once handling expectations are clear, though they can test a new groomer. Consistent, confident handling in a calm one-on-one setting works well for the breed.
