Papillon Dog Grooming.
Papillons are deceptively easy — a single silky coat with no undercoat, no mats to speak of if you stay on top of it, and then those enormous fringed ears that collect everything. K-Pup grooms papillons mobile, at your house, which suits a bright, sensitive little dog that does much better without a day in a kennel.
Ears, Plume & Pants
Grooming for every papillon feature.
The breed's signature is fringe: ears, chest, tail plume and the culottes on the back legs. Drop-eared phalène papillons carry the same coat. For background, see the AKC Papillon breed page.
Butterfly Ear Fringe
The long hair on the ear leather tangles at the base and picks up burrs and beach grass. We comb it out from underneath, trim the outline lightly so the butterfly shape stays clean, and check the canal while we're there.
The Tail Plume
That arched plume is the most photographed part of a papillon and the part that most often mats at the root. It gets combed to the skin and shaped only at the tip.
Phalène (Drop Ear)
Drop-eared papillons hold more moisture in the ear, especially after a coastal walk. Same coat work, plus a careful cleaning and drying routine every visit.
Puppies and Young Coats
Papillon coat comes in slowly — the fringe often isn't full until two years old. Early, short, positive visits teach a puppy to tolerate having its ears and feet handled, which pays off for a decade.

Single coat, no shave needed
Papillons have no undercoat, so they don't blow coat and almost never need a body clip. Bath, dry and comb-out is most of the job; the rest is careful trimming.
Hairy feet and slippery floors
Papillons grow long tufts between the toes and out past the pads. We trim them flush so the dog gets real traction — a small thing that matters for an athletic breed with delicate knees.
Patellas and gentle handling
Luxating patella is common in the breed. We support the hindquarters through the whole groom, never stretch a leg out to trim, and stop if a dog tells us something hurts.
Teeth deserve attention
Toy breeds build tartar early. Our brushing add-on is a genuinely useful habit for papillons, alongside home care and vet dentals.

Our Process
How we groom a Papillon.
Every papillon appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 1 hr 15 min, one dog at a time.
Comb through the fringe
Ears, chest, culottes and tail plume combed to the skin to find tangles, burrs or beach grass before any water touches the coat.
Gentle bath
A mild shampoo and a light conditioner for fine silky coat, with a careful tearless wash around that big-eared head.
Dry and straighten
A moderate-heat dry with a brush so the fringe dries straight and full rather than kinked.
Feet, hocks and sanitary
Toe tufts trimmed flush to the pads for traction, hocks tidied and a clean sanitary trim.
Fringe shaping
A light tip of the ear fringe and plume — enough to remove stragglers, never enough to lose the butterfly outline.
Nails, ears and finish
Nails clipped and ground, ears cleaned and checked, and a final comb-through.

Named for their ears
"Papillon" is French for butterfly — the fringed ears look like wings. The drop-eared version is a phalène, or moth.
Painted by the masters

How often should a papillon be groomed?
Every 6 to 8 weeks, with a comb through the ear fringe and tail plume once or twice a week at home. Papillons stay tidy for a long time between visits if the fringe is maintained.
Do papillons shed?
Lightly and year-round. With no undercoat there's no seasonal blow-out, so a papillon sheds far less than a similarly sized double-coated breed like a Pomeranian.
Should I trim my papillon's ear fringe?
Only the outline, and only lightly. The fringe is the breed's signature — we tidy stragglers and remove anything matted or tangled rather than shaping it short.
My papillon hates having his feet touched. Can you still groom him?
Yes. We work slowly, in short bursts, with the foot supported rather than pulled. Most dogs improve substantially over three or four appointments with the same groomer.
