Cockapoo Dog Grooming.

Cockapoos are one of the oldest designer mixes, and their coats can surprise owners: some are silky and straight, some curly, and most mat somewhere in between. K-Pup grooms cockapoos one at a time in a calm mobile trailer at your southern Maine home.

Generations & Cocker Influence

Not every cockapoo coat behaves the same.

American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel lines give different coat types, and the poodle percentage changes everything. The parent breed background is on the AKC Cocker Spaniel page.

Silky / Wavy Cockapoo Coats

More spaniel influence means a longer, silkier coat that tangles rather than curls. These coats need careful line-brushing and often look best in a medium-length scissor trim with feathering on the legs and ears.

Curly Cockapoo Coats

More poodle means a denser, curlier coat that holds water and mats fast. Curly cockapoos do best on a 4–6 week schedule with a defined length so the coat doesn't get ahead of the brush.

Mini & Toy Cockapoos

Small cockapoos are in and out in about an hour. We keep sessions brief, use low tables, and never rush a sensitive little dog. A lot of our small cockapoo clients started in mobile because salons were too overwhelming.

Color & Feathering

Buff, apricot, chocolate, black and parti cockapoos all share the same grooming needs, but the feathering on the ears, legs and tail is what gives them their look. We scissor that feathering to a length that stays clean and doesn't drag.

Cocker-Ear Care

The ears, skin and face need attention first.

Ear care is non-negotiable

Cocker Spaniel heritage means long, heavy ears that trap moisture. Ear infections are the most common cockapoo health issue we see. We clean, dry, and remove excess hair from the canal every single visit.

Skin and coat health

Cockapoos can inherit sensitive skin and seborrhea. We use a gentle, conditioning shampoo and avoid over-stripping the coat. If your dog is itchy, we note it and may recommend a vet check before anything else.

Face, eyes and the muzzle

The long cocker muzzle and big eyes need regular tidying. We keep the hair out of the eyes, trim the muzzle so food doesn't stick, and clean the eye corners so staining doesn't set.

Coastal salt and burrs

Maine beach walks mean salt in the coat and burrs in the feathering. A clarifying bath and a careful brush-out keep the coat from drying out and the burrs from turning into mats near the skin.

Our Process

How we groom a Cockapoo.

Every cockapoo appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr, one dog at a time.

  1. Ear-first assessment

Cockapoos inherit heavy cocker ears, so we check inside the leathers for moisture, odor and matting first — that's the most common problem we find on southern Maine cockapoos after a summer of swimming.

  2. Line brush and de-mat

The wavy coat felts at the ears, armpits and skirt. We line-brush to the skin everywhere and clear the ear feathering completely before the bath.

  3. Bath with degreasing shampoo

Cockapoos can carry a heavier skin oil from the cocker side. A degreasing wash followed by conditioner cleans the coat properly and cuts the musky smell for weeks, not days.

  4. Force dry and separate

We dry the body straight and pay special attention to drying the ear leathers front and back — a damp cockapoo ear is an infection waiting to happen.

  5. Cocker-style or puppy trim

Either a short practical puppy cut all over, or the classic cocker shape with a shorter jacket and longer skirt and leg feathering. Ears are scissored to a clean length off the tip.

  6. Nails, ears, sanitary and finish

Nails clipped and ground smooth, ear hair cleared and canals wiped, sanitary and paw pads tidied, then a light coastal-safe spritz. We hand you back a dog you can put straight on the couch.

Fun Facts

The best things about cockapoos.

We groom a lot of cockapoos, and every one of them reminds us why the breed has such a loyal following. Here's what we love about the cockapoo.

One of the original doodles

Cockapoos have been bred in the U.S. since the 1950s, decades before the doodle boom. They're the blueprint.

Cocker ears need attention

Long, heavy, low-set ears trap moisture. Cleaning and trimming the ear channel at every groom prevents most infections.

Merry is the official word

The cocker spaniel standard literally describes a "merry" temperament, and cockapoos inherited every bit of it.

Compact and portable

Most land between 12 and 24 pounds — big enough for the beach, small enough for the passenger seat.

Coats that shift with age

Cockapoo puppies often start wavy and turn curlier by year two, which usually means moving to a tighter grooming schedule.

Bird-dog nose

That spaniel side means a cockapoo will find every dropped snack within a half-mile radius of the trailer.

Cockapoo Grooming FAQ

Questions cockapoos owners ask us.

How often should a cockapoo be groomed?

Every 4–6 weeks for a full groom, with ear and face tidies every 2–3 weeks. Silky coats may need more frequent brushing; curly coats need more frequent trims.

Do cockapoos shed?

Curly cockapoos shed very little but mat easily. Silky cockapoos can shed into the coat and onto furniture. Regular brushing and the right shampoo make a big difference either way.

Why are my cockapoo's ears always smelly?

Long, heavy ears trap moisture and debris. Professional ear cleaning and drying at each groom, plus keeping the ear hair managed, is the best prevention. Persistent odor warrants a vet check.

Can you groom my cockapoo if it has sensitive skin?

Yes — we use gentle, conditioning products and take a history of any skin issues. We'll also flag anything we see so you can address it early.

Where in southern Maine do you groom cockapoos?

We serve Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Cape Porpoise, Goose Rocks Beach, Arundel, Biddeford, Saco, Wells, Ogunquit, York, Old Orchard Beach and Scarborough, covering the coast from York up through Scarborough.
