Warm gentle bath
Tearless puppy shampoo, warm water, and a hand-held sprayer at low pressure so nothing about the first bath is startling.
Dryer desensitizing
We introduce the dryer on its lowest, quietest setting from a distance and work closer. The dryer is what most adult dogs are actually scared of — we defuse it now.
First nail trim
Sometimes all four paws, sometimes two and a biscuit. Both count as a win at this age.
Clipper introduction
We run the clippers near your puppy, then rest them against the body without cutting, so the buzz and vibration become normal before they ever mean a haircut.
Face, feet, sanitary tidy
A light trim around the eyes, paws, and rear — enough to be useful, not enough to make a nervous puppy sit still for an hour.
Handling practice
Ears, muzzle, tail, and paws all get handled and rewarded. That's the part that pays off at every vet visit for the rest of their life.
Good To Know
When should a puppy's first groom be?
Book the first visit about two weeks after the final round of puppy vaccinations — typically around 12 to 16 weeks. That lands inside the tail end of the socialization window, when new experiences are still filed under 'normal' instead of 'alarming.'
Don't wait for the coat to need it. Owners of doodles, shih tzus, and other coated breeds often wait until six or eight months, when the puppy coat starts matting — and now the first appointment is a long, uncomfortable dematting session. That's the worst possible introduction.
After the intro visit, we like to see puppies every four to six weeks. Short, positive, and frequent beats long and occasional every single time. By the third or fourth appointment most puppies are doing a full groom without any drama.
Between visits, brush your puppy for two minutes a day and touch every paw. It sounds small. It's the whole game.

Meet outside first
We say hello on the lawn, not on the table. Your puppy explores the ramp and the trailer doorway with treats before anything happens.
Table, treats, no tools
First minutes on the grooming table are just standing there being fed. We want the table to predict good things before it predicts a bath.
Warm bath, low pressure
Tearless shampoo, warm water, one hand on the puppy the whole time. Short and calm — we're not chasing spotless.
Meet the dryer
Lowest setting, starting at the back end and far away. We stop the second body language tightens and come back to it.
Tools without the haircut
Nail trim, then clippers running near and against the body without cutting, so the sensation gets separated from the stress.
End early, end happy
We stop while your puppy is still doing well, even if that means the trim is lighter than planned. Then a full report on what they loved and what to practice at home.

- Constantly — goldendoodles, labradoodles, bernedoodles, sheepadoodles, cavapoos and cockapoos are a big share of our puppy book. Their coat changes at around eight to ten months, which is when matting hits hard, so starting early matters more for them than most.
