Every Coat, Every Size

Grooming for every kind of dachshund.

Dachshunds come in three coat types and two sizes, and each one needs a different hand. Learn more about the official breed standard from the AKC Dachshund page. Here's how we groom each variety.

Long-Haired Dachshund Grooming

Silky feathering on the ears, chest, legs and tail mats faster than owners expect — especially behind the ears and in the "armpits." We de-shed, line-brush, bathe with a coat-specific conditioner, then hand-scissor the feathering and skirt so it hangs clean off that long back instead of dragging the ground.

Smooth (Short-Haired) Dachshund Grooming

Short coats still shed constantly and hold coastal salt and sand. A deshedding bath, carding, and a shine-finish blow-dry pulls out the dead undercoat, cuts shedding in the house dramatically, and leaves that glossy seal-slick doxie coat.

Wire-Haired Dachshund Grooming

Wire coats need the harsh outer texture kept, not clipped away. We hand-strip or card the jacket, tidy the beard and eyebrows, clean up the legs, and keep the classic terrier-ish wire look instead of leaving a soft, faded clipper coat.

Miniature Dachshund Grooming

Minis (11 lbs and under) are small, wiggly and often nervous about being lifted. One-pup-at-a-time in the trailer means no crates, no barking room, no waiting — a mini doxie is usually in and out in about an hour.

Built For Doxies

A long dog needs a careful groomer.

Backs and bellies come first

Dachshunds are prone to IVDD, so we never let a doxie twist or jump off the table. Low-lift handling, a supported body throughout, and a table harness the whole time.

Long, low ears

Those big drop ears trap moisture — a real thing on a humid Maine coast. Every groom includes ear cleaning, hair removal where needed, and a full dry so nothing stays damp.

Chest-to-ground clearance

Low bellies pick up beach sand, road salt and mud. We pay extra attention to the underline, chest feathering and paw pads, and trim the hair between the pads for grip on hardwood floors.

Nails, teeth and skin

Short legs mean nails hit the floor fast. Every visit includes a nail trim and file, hygiene tidy, and an optional anesthesia-free teeth cleaning — small breeds are the most tartar-prone dogs we see.

Dachshund owners can learn more about IVDD prevention and back safety at Dodger's List, a trusted resource for doxie spinal health.

Dachshund Grooming FAQ

Questions doxie owners ask us.

How often should a dachshund be groomed?

Smooth dachshunds do well with a bath and deshed every 6–8 weeks. Long-haired doxies need a full groom every 6 weeks to stay ahead of matting in the ears and skirt. Wire-haired coats get hand-stripped or carded roughly every 8–12 weeks with baths in between.

Do you groom miniature dachshunds?

Yes — miniature dachshunds are one of the most common breeds we see across southern Maine. The trailer is quiet, one-dog-at-a-time, and sized for small dogs, which is usually far less stressful for a nervous mini than a busy salon.

Can you groom a dachshund with back problems or IVDD?

We groom senior and IVDD-prone doxies regularly. We use low-lift handling, keep the spine supported, avoid any twisting on the table, and can shorten the session if your dog needs it. Just tell us when you book.

Do long-haired dachshunds get shaved?

We don't recommend it. Shaving a double-coated long-hair can damage regrowth and remove sun and insulation protection. Instead we deshed, brush out, and scissor the feathering into a neat, low-maintenance shape.

Where in southern Maine do you groom dachshunds?

We come to you across Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Cape Porpoise, Goose Rocks Beach, Arundel, Biddeford, Saco, Wells, Ogunquit, York, Old Orchard Beach and Scarborough — everything from Kennebunkport and Cape Porpoise up to Scarborough and down to York.
