The Classic Round Trim
The look the breed is known for: a full, even powder-puff head scissored into a circle with a shorter, shaped body. It takes a complete brush-out, a fluff dry and hand scissoring — there's no clipper shortcut to a proper bichon head.
Short Practical Trims
Half an inch to an inch all over with a smaller rounded head. Far easier to maintain through a Maine winter, dries fast, and still reads unmistakably bichon.
Dense Curly Coats
A true bichon coat is a soft undercoat under a coarser curly outer coat — springy to the touch and dense enough to hide serious matting. We brush and comb in sections and check with a comb, not our hands.
Sensitive Skin & Allergies
Bichons are one of the more allergy-prone breeds. We can switch to hypoallergenic, oatmeal or medicated shampoo, keep water cooler, and flag any hot spots or irritation we find under the coat.

Fluff drying is the whole trick
A bichon dried in a cage comes out flat and curly. We dry by hand with a brush and a dryer so the coat stands up and can be scissored into a real shape.
Whitening without irritation
Brightening shampoo lifts sand, salt and grass yellowing, and conditioner goes back in afterwards so the skin underneath stays comfortable.
Tear stain and eye care
Bichons are prone to weepy eyes and blocked tear ducts. We clean and trim the eye corners at every appointment and tell you if something looks worth a vet's opinion.
The matting conversation
A dense curly coat can pelt without looking bad from the outside. If it's past brushing we'll say so, take it short humanely, and rebuild the length over the next two or three grooms.

Our Process
How we groom a Bichon Frise.
Every bichon frise appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 1 hr 45 min, one dog at a time.
Full brush and comb-out
Every curl gets brushed and then comb-checked. The round trim only works on a coat that's genuinely clear to the skin.
Whitening bath
Brightening shampoo to lift yellowing, conditioner to protect the skin, and a hypoallergenic or medicated base if your bichon has allergies.
Hand fluff dry
The key step: drying by hand with a brush and dryer so the coat stands up straight and can hold a shape.
Scissor the round
Head scissored into a circle, body shaped to your length, legs blended into columns, and the silhouette checked from all four sides.
Feet, nails, ears and eyes
Pads shaved, feet rounded, nails clipped and ground, ears cleaned, and eye corners trimmed clear of the lashes.

How often should a Bichon Frise be groomed?
Every 4–6 weeks. The curly coat grows continuously and mats close to the skin, so stretching past six weeks usually means a shorter trim than you wanted.
Why does a bichon groom take longer than other small dogs?
The hand fluff drying and scissoring are what create the round shape. There's no way to rush either without losing the look.
Can you help with my bichon's itchy skin?
We can use hypoallergenic, oatmeal or medicated shampoos, rinse thoroughly, and flag anything that looks like it needs a vet. Grooming helps a lot with allergy comfort, but it isn't a substitute for treatment.
Will you shave my bichon down?
Only when the coat is pelted and brushing would hurt. Otherwise we'll take the shortest length that's comfortable and grow it back deliberately.
Do bichons shed?
Very little — the loose hair stays trapped in the curl. That's great for allergies and exactly why regular brushing and grooming isn't optional.
