An Akita is a hundred-plus pounds of dignified, deeply loyal dog wearing one of the heaviest double coats in the AKC lineup. The Plush Standard Coat
A stiff, straight outer coat over an extremely dense undercoat built for northern Japanese winters. It handles Maine weather beautifully and produces an extraordinary volume of shed hair.
The Long Coat Akita
Occasionally an Akita carries a recessive long coat with feathering on the ears, legs and tail. These dogs need real line brushing and light tidying that a standard coat doesn't.
Twice-Yearly Coat Blow
Spring and fall, an Akita sheds undercoat by the bagful. A deshedding bath and a long, methodical high-velocity dry is the only approach that keeps up.
Seniors & Big-Dog Joints
Hip and joint issues are common in giant breeds. Low ramps, supported standing and shorter sessions keep an older Akita comfortable throughout.

Calm, confident handling matters
Akitas are reserved with strangers and read the person handling them closely. Slow introductions, no crowding and a predictable routine get far more cooperation than pressure ever will.
Deshedding is the whole job
An undercoat rake, a deshedding bath and a patient high-velocity blow-out to the skin remove pounds of dead coat. Skip it and that undercoat packs down and traps moisture against the skin.
Never shave the coat
That double coat regulates temperature in both directions and protects against sun. Shaving a northern breed is genuinely harmful and often permanent.
Salt, snow and dense feet
Snow and road salt ball up in the hair between an Akita's toes on a Maine winter walk. We keep pad hair trimmed and rinse feet completely.

Our Process
How we groom a Akita.
Every akita appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr, one dog at a time.
Slow introduction
Akitas are reserved with new people. We take the first few minutes at their pace, no crowding, before anything starts.
Undercoat rake
A thorough rake through the plush coat clears the first layer of dead undercoat and reveals any packed areas behind the ears and on the britches.
Deshedding bath
A deshedding shampoo worked right down to the skin across a very large surface area, then rinsed completely.
Long high-velocity dry
The step that takes the most time and does the most good — warm high-velocity air section by section, driving undercoat out to the skin.
Ears, pads, nails and sanitary
Ears cleaned and dried, hair between the pads trimmed so snow and salt can't ball up, nails clipped and ground, sanitary tidied.
Final check and supported exit
One more pass over the coat, a full skin check, and a supported walk back down the ramp.

How often should an Akita be groomed?
Every 8 to 10 weeks for a full deshedding groom, with dedicated extra sessions during spring and fall coat blow.
How much do Akitas shed?
A lot, all year, and enormously twice a year. A single professional deshedding session during coat blow can remove several pounds of undercoat.
Should I shave my Akita for summer?
Never. The double coat insulates against heat and protects the skin from sun, and it often grows back patchy or textureless. Deshedding is what actually keeps them cool.
My Akita doesn't like strangers. Will grooming go badly?
Not with the right setup. Mobile means no other dogs, no crowded shop and no crate wait — just a slow introduction and a predictable routine on their own turf.
Can you groom a dog this big in a trailer?
