Goldens are the unofficial state dog of the Maine coast — and the reason our shop vac earns its keep. K-Pup is a mobile golden retriever grooming service: one dog at a time in a quiet trailer parked in your driveway, with a full deshedding treatment and a real blow-out built into every appointment.
Every Coat, Every Age
Grooming for every kind of golden.

Heavy Show-Line Coats
Thick, wavy and long through the chest, britches and tail. These coats hold sand and salt for days and pack down behind the ears and under the collar. We rake out the undercoat, bathe twice, then force-dry and card so the coat lies flat instead of frizzing.
Field / Working Golden Coats
Shorter, flatter and darker, with less feathering — but they still blow coat twice a year. A deshedding bath and full dry pulls out an astonishing amount, and we tidy the feet and tail so the working shape stays clean.
Golden Puppies
First grooms are training grooms. We keep it short and positive: bath, gentle dry, nails, feet and a quick tidy, so the dryer and the table become normal long before the adult coat comes in around a year old.
Seniors & Sensitive Skin
Older goldens get hot spots, lipomas and stiff hips. We use a non-slip low table, keep sessions short, work around lumps carefully, and use oatmeal or medicated shampoo when skin is flaring.

Never shave a golden. Deshed it instead.
The undercoat is the whole job
A golden's outer coat protects from sun and water; the soft undercoat insulates. Shaving destroys both and often grows back patchy. We use undercoat rakes, a deshedding bath and high-velocity drying to remove the dead coat and leave the guard hairs intact.
Salt water, sand and beach days
Goose Rocks and Ogunquit in July mean salt drying on the skin and sand ground into the feathering. Every groom includes a clarifying wash and a full dry — damp feathering under a collar is exactly how a hot spot starts.
Ears, feet and feathering
Drop ears plus swimming equals ear infections. We clean and dry the canals every visit, shave the hair between the paw pads for winter traction, and tidy the ear, leg and tail feathering without cutting the shape off the dog.
Ticks, burrs and mud season
York County is thick with deer ticks. We comb the whole dog to the skin on every appointment and tell you what we find — plenty of ticks get spotted on our table before they get spotted at home.

Our Process
How we groom a Golden Retriever.
Every golden retriever appointment follows the same order, start to finish, in the trailer in your driveway. Typical appointment time: about 2 hr 30 min, one dog at a time.
Driveway arrival and coat check
We park at your curb and run our hands through the coat first — behind the ears, the collar line, the britches and the tail. That tells us how much undercoat is coming out today and whether there's matting or a hot spot to work around.
Pre-bath undercoat rake
Before water touches the dog we rake out the loose undercoat with an undercoat rake and comb. Removing that dead layer dry makes the bath actually reach the skin instead of sitting on top of felted hair.
Double bath with deshedding solution
First wash cuts salt, sand and beach grime; second wash is a deshedding treatment that loosens the remaining undercoat at the follicle. Goldens who swim get a clarifying rinse to strip salt out of the feathering.
High-velocity blow-out
This is where most of the shedding disappears. We force-dry the entire coat down to the skin, which pushes out the dead undercoat, lifts the guard hairs and makes sure nothing stays damp under the collar or in the ruff.
Feathering, feet and sanitary tidy
We hand-scissor the ear, leg and tail feathering, round out the feet, shave the hair between the paw pads for traction and tidy the sanitary area — shape kept, bulk removed. Never a shave-down.
Ears, nails and tick check
Ear canals cleaned and dried, nails clipped and ground smooth, and a full comb-through so any deer ticks in the coat get found before they get home.

Bred to carry gently
Goldens were developed to retrieve birds without damaging them. That soft mouth comes with a soft temperament — they're one of the easiest breeds to groom.

Cream, golden and dark red are all the same breed. Coat color says nothing about coat care — every golden needs the same deshedding routine.

How often should a golden retriever be groomed?
Every 6–8 weeks year-round, and every 4–6 weeks during the spring and fall coat blows. Brushing two or three times a week at home keeps the britches and ear feathering from packing down between visits.
Should I shave my golden retriever in summer?
No. The double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and shields against sunburn, and shaved goldens often grow back a patchy, coarse coat. A proper deshed removes the dead insulation and cools the dog far more effectively.
Why does my golden's coat mat behind the ears?
That's the softest hair on the body and it rubs against collars and harnesses. Line-brush behind each ear and under the collar twice a week and you'll almost never see a mat.
How long does a golden retriever groom take?
About two to two and a half hours in the trailer, longer if the dog is mid-blow. It's one dog per appointment — no crate time and no waiting around.
